Frequently Asked Questions

Why Rugby?

Rugby is the 2nd most played sport in the World and the fastest growing sport in the United States. It is a sport for life, enjoyed by players of all ages, sizes, and athletic ability. All players get a chance to run, pass, kick, and score!

I’ve never played before. Is that a problem?

Not one bit! While there are many fine points to the game, getting the basics down is fairly easy. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about the game.

Are there alternative payment options?

Wilson's Mills Youth Rugby will not refuse any player due to financial issues. We are more than happy to work our payment plans, discounts, other arrangements (volunteering at events) or we will even sponsor the player completely. We have a number dedicated rugby people in the area that are happy to help.

Do I have to be big to play Rugby?

Not at all! Rugby is a game for everyone, regardless of age, size or fitness levels. Rugby is a sport for life. Because of the variety of positions and skills demanded in the game, players of all shapes and sizes can find a position.

How often do you practice?

Wilson's Mills Youth Rugby practices once per week during the season. Each practice last between 60-90 minutes.

When do you play games?

Games are held on Saturday mornings lasting about an hour or so.

Correct. We have the support of the Town of Wilson's Mills. Our program is the first recreational youth rugby program in the region with a relationship with their local government.

Do you need to live in Wilson's Mills to play?

You do not. Girls & Boys from all over Johnston County and beyond are welcome to participate in the program.

Who do you play?

Wilson's Mills Youth Rugby is designed as an in-house program, so all of the teams operate under the same program. Players will be placed on designated teams after registration and assigned a coach. They will compete against the other teams in their age group.

What format do you play?

We use the Rugby 7s format for our program. It is the same version of rugby that is played in the Olympics. It is a great introduction to the sport and provides plenty of space on the pitch for players to express themselves. In the younger age groups, we may play 5 v 5 or 6 v 6 so as to create more space and opportunities for all players to get involved.

Do you play coed tackle at all age groups?

No. We only play coed Tackle Rugby at the U12 (5th-6th) age group. At the U14 (7th-8th grade) age group girls and boys are separated when playing Tackle.

Do you offer Flag Rugby for older age groups?

Yes we do. During the Fall we offer an 8-week Flag Rugby program for girls & boys in K-8th grade. The program takes place one night per week.
